The first "Hybrid Car" was in fact the Lohner-Porsche Elektro-Mobil, first shown to the general public at the Paris Exposition in 1900. They sold approximately 300 cars before the idea of hybrids faded into history for many years.
It wasn't turned into a viable enterprise until Toyota introduced the Prius in Japan in 1997. By 2007 they had sold over one million worldwide!
There are now a number of Hybrid cars on the market from all the leading manufacturers.
Toyota took the lead with the Prius, followed up with the smaller Yaris Hybrid.
BMW have the i8, showing hybrids can still be sporty and fun.
Mitsubishi offers the Outlander PHEV, popular as an SUV, no more expensive than the diesel equivalent, and as it is Plug-In it qualifies for the government subsidy of £4500.
The Mercedes C Class C300h is a smart company car choice and reported by WhatCar? to be "more agile and plusher" than the Lexus IS300h. And the Volvo XC90 T8 is one of the few to offer 7 seats.
The "Hot Hatch" market is covered with the VW Golf GTE. And Audi put forward their Family hybrid with the A3 E-tron, offering a "slightly more comfortable ride than the Golf".
But leading the way in WhatCar?'s 2017 list of the best Hybrid cars is the VW Passat GTE!
"Sleek, stylish & Repsonsive" the Passat Hybrid offers the best of both worlds. Reported to do 500 miles on a single tank, the VW Passat boasts a great interior, seats 5 passengers comfortably, and the estate version has large boot space.
They offer great levels of styling & technology - Allow Wheels, LED Headlights, Leather interiors. And VW's Car-Net e-remote services app allows you to access many vehicle functions remotely via a smartphone. For example, you can activate the AC before your journey even begins!
